Flybanger emerged as a hard rock outfit based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, after previously performing under the name Jar. The group gained early exposure by supporting Filter, Machine Head, and Orange 9MM on tour. Rob Wade formed the band in 1995 following extended involvement with various local Canadian acts. Its lineup consists of Wade on drums, bassist Tom MacDonald, guitarist Bryan Fratesi, and vocalist Garth. The independent release Knottskull attracted interest from multiple labels once the members spent considerable time driving across Canada in a van to promote it. Columbia Records then issued their major-label debut, Headtrip to Nowhere, in February 2001. Producer Matt Wallace, previously associated with Faith No More and the Deftones, helmed the sessions and recruited ex-Faith No More guitarist Jim Martin for contributions on multiple tracks.
