Biography
Born Frøydis Skinnarland, Norwegian country singer Frøya maintains her home on a farm in the Norwegian countryside and draws from an array of musical inspirations that encompass American country figures Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, and Martina McBride together with the Norwegian artists Carola, Anne Nørdsti, and Lasse Stefanz. Her mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2009 through the second album, Jenta Fra Landet.
Her first full-length release, the English-language Summersun, appeared in 2007 on Piraya Music under the billing Frøydis Skinnarland and produced the minor hit “Dance Tonight,” accompanied by a filmed video. After that track led to a contract with Mariann, the Warner Music Group affiliate, she adopted the simplified stage name Frøya and delivered her major-label debut, Jenta Fra Landet, in 2009. The album reached the Norwegian Top Ten and generated multiple singles, among them “Sorgfulle Barn” and the title track, a Norwegian-language version of Gretchen Wilson’s 2004 American country anthem “Redneck Woman.”
