Biography
Led by multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Eric Owyoung, Future of Forestry blends sincere, literate, spiritual themes with understated ambient sounds that incorporate both acoustic and electronic textures. The Christian indie rock outfit took its name from a C.S. Lewis poem and emerged after the dissolution of Something Like Silas, a band Owyoung had started in 2000 alongside his then-wife Malina Owyoung. Their marriage ended around the same time as the group’s, prompting Eric Owyoung to declare in 2006 that he would launch a fresh project with a different artistic focus.
Future of Forestry initially retained the final lineup from Something Like Silas, yet Owyoung soon became its sole steady presence as he tested new approaches, enlisting varying musicians for each album and tour. The band signed with Credential Recordings—the Christian alternative imprint distributed by EMI that had previously pursued Something Like Silas—and issued its self-titled debut EP in 2006. Twilight, the first full-length release, followed in 2007.
Over the ensuing years the project centered on the Travel EP series, whose three volumes appeared between 2009 and 2010, and on the Christmas-themed Advent EP series, which began in 2008 and continued with further installments in 2010 and 2013. The Travel material was later gathered into the 2011 compilation The Complete Travel Series; that same year the band released the limited-edition A Film and TV Collection, a sampler of Owyoung’s work for visual media.
Owyoung started his own imprint, Sound Swan Records, for the 2012 album Young Man Follow and simultaneously opened a studio of the same name, using the space for Future of Forestry recordings as well as sessions and mixes for additional artists.
