Gungor formed as a collective shaped by baroque pop, folk, and experimental rock impulses and revolves around the husband-and-wife partnership of Michael and Lisa Gungor. Though the group emerged from Christian musical roots and frequently weaves spiritual themes into its work, the members have never identified as a CCM act.

Michael grew up in Wisconsin, where he led worship alongside his father, a pastor. He first crossed paths with Lisa while both attended Oral Roberts University, then pursued jazz studies at Western Michigan University and the University of North Texas. After settling in Michigan, he became involved with the teen ministry Acquire the Fire, which prompted the creation of his self-described “liturgical post-rock” project, the Michael Gungor Band. That ensemble issued Bigger Than My Imagination in 2003 and Ancient Skies in 2006.

Following their marriage, Michael and Lisa moved to Denver, Colorado, where they established the faith community Bloom. Michael subsequently shortened the band’s name to Gungor and issued the album Beautiful Things in 2010. The following year brought the elaborate Ghosts Upon the Earth, which received Grammy nominations for Best Gospel Song and Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album. Also in 2011 the group delivered the live recording Creation Liturgy: Live. Their fifth studio album, I Am Mountain, appeared in 2013.
