Biography
Hailing from Seattle, Washington, the faith-based alternative rock outfit King's Kaleidoscope weaves together math rock, hip-hop, chamber pop, and anthemic indie rock. Their debut full-length, Becoming Who We Are, appeared in 2014 on Tooth & Nail and drew strong critical notice. Later projects Beyond Control (2016), Zeal (2019), and the 2020 EP Power Perfect sustained that genre-blending approach and connected with both secular and faith-based listeners.
Chad Gardner fronts the band as singer and songwriter; the ten-piece ensemble came together in 2010 at Mars Hill Church, where Gardner served as worship leader. He gradually recruited musicians from within the congregation to craft a large-scale orchestral indie pop sound that grew richer with each weekly gathering. Early influences ranged from math rock and hip-hop to the layered textures of Canadian indie group Broken Social Scene. The first release, the live EP Sin, arrived in 2011, followed by the studio EP Asaph's Arrows in 2012 and the holiday-themed EP Joy Has Dawned later that year.
Early in 2013, Gardner and the band announced their departure from Mars Hill and its associated label. Their next EP, Live in Color, surfaced in 2014 on Bad Christian Records, the imprint started by Seattle post-hardcore act Emery. Teaming with both Bad Christian and Tooth & Nail, King's Kaleidoscope issued the debut LP Becoming Who We Are in November 2014. Expanding on their fusion of electronic and acoustic elements, Gardner and his collaborators delivered the conceptual, introspective Beyond Control in 2016; the album climbed to number six on Billboard's Christian Albums chart and number 16 on the Independent Albums chart, marking their biggest success yet. Breaking from convention, the next project paired the band with several hip-hop artists and producers for the 2017 mixtape The Beauty Between. Zeal, their fourth LP, arrived in April 2019 and entered the Top Ten on both the Christian Albums and Independent Albums charts. The three-song EP Power Perfect followed in 2020, and the single "You & I Again" emerged in early 2022.
