Biography
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Gabriella Cohen composes atmospheric songs suffused with sadness that dwell on heartbreak and solitude. Her influences range from Mazzy Star and the Velvet Underground to pop of the 1950s and 1960s, resulting in guitar-heavy pieces that feel dreamy yet unhurried, close and self-examining. Early in 2013 she joined forces with songwriter Jim Griffin to launch the Furrs, an unstructured garage pop pair that issued two positively received EPs while touring widely across Australia and appearing alongside King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and the Babe Rainbow. During those years Cohen also developed independent work, placing two sets of demo recordings on Bandcamp. Material from the 2015 demo set later appeared on her debut album Full Closure and No Details, released independently in 2016. Mojo, Uncut, and Rolling Stone Australia all commended the record, leading Captured Tracks to reissue it in 2017.
