Biography
English singer and guitarist Sam Duckworth anchors the indie emo-folk project Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, whose name derives from a computer-magazine headline about a Batman game. His listening habits merged electronic sounds, politically minded folk artists, and post-hardcore, prompting him to start the venture in 2004 in his hometown of Southend, Essex after fronting a hardcore punk band. Live appearances usually find Duckworth pairing acoustic guitar with a laptop, and early touring highlights included shows alongside José González and OK Go. Leaving indie imprint Big Scary Monsters for Atlantic, he saw the label issue his first album, Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager, in September 2006, with the U.S. version arriving in April 2007; the record climbed to number 26 on the U.K. chart. The follow-up, Searching for the Hows and Whys, emerged eighteen months later but sold more modestly, resulting in his release from Atlantic. Cooking Vinyl then released the self-titled Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly album in 2010. The next year Duckworth issued his debut solo set under his own name, The Mannequin. Two further Get Cape albums, Maps in 2012 and London Royal in 2014 on the small indie Alcopop!, preceded his announcement that he would retire the project name. He remained with Alcopop! for one more release under his own name, 2015’s Amazing Grace, before signing with punk label Xtra Mile. In 2016 he introduced another alias, Recreations, via the album Baby Boomers 2. Get Cape returned in 2018 with Young Adult, a record that departed markedly from the airy solo folktronica that first earned him notice and featured him backed by a full live band for the first time.
