Los Angeles-based producer gnash fuses the raw emotional openness associated with early-2000s emo singer/songwriters and the textures of introspective alternative R&B. In 2016 the international hit “i hate u, i love u,” recorded with Olivia O'Brien, earned multi-platinum certification on multiple continents and climbed into the Top Ten across the U.S., Europe, and Australasia. The track, which later exceeded a billion streams, appeared on his first full-length project, the 2019 album We. After that release he issued dozens of singles and featured on numerous collaborations until 2023, when he delivered his second album, The Art of Letting Go.

Born Garrett Charles Nash, gnash began his career as a DJ and as half of the duo Gemineyes alongside Harry Hudson. A 2014 reinterpretation of O.T. Genasis’s “CoCo” drew early blog coverage and prompted a series of digital singles throughout 2015. That March he issued his debut EP, U, a mellow and laid-back collection that placed his rapping over woozy atmospherics in the manner of Drake and Troye Sivan. At year’s end he followed with me. Twelve months after his first release he unveiled the seven-track EP us, an emotive, downtempo set he characterized as “his personal sonic journey through life’s ups and downs—breakups, self-discovery, searching for new experiences—ultimately leading to loving oneself.” Guest appearances on the project came from Compton rapper Buddy, Goody Grace, Mark Johns, Liphemra, Wrenn, Quiñ, and Rosabeales. The lead single, the 2016 duet “i hate u, i love u” with Olivia O'Brien, topped charts worldwide and ultimately surpassed one billion streams.

Gnash resurfaced in 2018 with the singles “The Broken Hearts Club,” “Nobody’s Home,” and “t-shirt,” all of which featured on his official debut album, we, issued early the following year by Atlantic. Entering the 2020s he continued to drop standalone tracks such as “Wash Your Hands” and worked with CXLOE, Walk Off the Earth, Clara Mae, and Shwayze.
