Biography
Iann Dior crafts emo-rap tracks laced with pop sensibilities that appeal to broad audiences. After enduring a difficult breakup, he turned to songwriting as an outlet for his distress and was taken aback when uploading the results online generated an enthusiastic response. Those modest origins quickly led to industry connections and a rapidly expanding listener base. Initial releases and his first full-length project, Industry Plant, from 2019, generated considerable buzz, yet it was his guest spot on 24kGoldn’s blockbuster single “Mood” in 2020 that propelled him to worldwide fame. Capitalizing on that success, he delivered a more rock-oriented follow-up album, On to Better Things, in January 2022. His third studio effort, Leave Me Where You Found Me, surfaced the following year, while the EP Blind arrived in 2024.
Born Michael Ian Olmo in Corpus Christi, Texas, he first experimented with music at age 17 under short-lived aliases such as Olmo and Lil Rock. Adopting the Iann Dior name, he began recording material centered on heartbreak, sex, and substance use, surfacing in early 2019 with the Nick Mira-produced track “cutthroat.” Mira had already established himself through collaborations with introspective pop-rap artists including Juice WRLD and Lil Skies. Momentum built swiftly thereafter, culminating in a recording contract with TenThousand Projects, a label also home to 6ix9ine and Trippie Redd.
His debut mixtape, Nothings Ever Good Enough, landed in April 2019 and accumulated millions of streams across its tracks. Later that year he issued the single “Gone Girl,” which included a guest verse from labelmate Trippie Redd, along with the romantic “What Is Real.” Both cuts appeared on his studio debut, Industry Plant, released in November and featuring appearances by Phem and Travis Barker. A string of singles followed in the first half of 2020, among them “Good Day” and “Prospect” with Lil Baby. The EP I’m Gone, out in June, reached number 45 on the Billboard chart. Dior’s major commercial breakthrough occurred in July when he joined 24kGoldn on “Mood,” a melodic rap hit that held the top position in the United States for eight weeks and topped charts internationally as well.
With global recognition secured, he issued the EP Still Here in 2021 and teamed with Glass Animals, Lil Tecca, Illenium, and additional artists on various tracks. January 2022 brought his second studio album, On to Better Things, which included contributions from Lil Uzi Vert, Machine Gun Kelly, and Travis Barker and entered the Billboard Top 30. Further singles comprised “Live Fast Die Numb” and “Valley of Lies” alongside Tomorrow X Together. Dior opened 2023 with “Do It All” and “10x3,” both later featured on his third album Leave Me Where You Found Me. “You Don’t Even” and “Low Tide” closed out the year, preceding the 2024 arrival of the EP Blind.
