Biography
Halfway to Hazard emerged as a rock-infused country duo anchored by Chad Warrix, who handled vocals, guitar, and mandolin, alongside David Tolliver on vocals and guitar. Both musicians hailed from modest communities across southeastern Kentucky and experienced closely parallel upbringings in working-class households that included older sisters, athletic pursuits, and regular excursions to Hazard, KY, drawn by its movie theaters, beer outlets, and live-music spots. Although their hometowns sat fifty miles distant, they crossed paths repeatedly in Hazard and formed a friendship. Tolliver first encountered music through childhood performances with his family’s singing group, whereas Warrix began composing and delivering original material in a high-school rock band. Their paths converged again after relocating to Nashville—Warrix arriving in 1996 to attend Belmont University and Tolliver following in 1998—where they resumed contact at social gatherings, realized shared musical affinities, and started performing together despite Warrix’s initial lack of professional aspirations. Over time they composed songs that merged hard-edged rock & roll with emotionally direct country narratives, then worked the local club circuit. Their breakthrough arrived in 2006 through an invitation to join Faith Hill and Tim McGraw on the Soul2Soul tour, after which they secured a Mercury Records contract. The single “Daisy” gained traction on country radio, paving the way for the release of their self-titled debut album in summer 2007.
