Blending country, blues, and folk foundations with a hint of rock propulsion, Jade Jackson creates songs that alternate between raw emotional exposure and a clear assertion of autonomy. Raised in rural California, she absorbed classic country alongside alternative rock during her formative years, though her first full-length recording, the 2017 album Gilded, leaned more heavily into folk and country textures while showcasing the distinctive rasp in her voice. A tougher, guitar-driven approach defined her follow-up, Wilderness, which appeared in 2019.
Born in 1992 in Santa Margarita, California—a community of fewer than 1,500 residents located roughly ten miles from San Luis Obispo—Jackson grew up while her parents operated a local restaurant. Their record shelves held everything from country stalwarts Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Townes Van Zandt to alternative acts such as the Smiths, the Cure, and Echo and the Bunnymen. Because television and internet access were prohibited in the household, Jackson and her siblings relied on those albums for entertainment, studying them closely. At age thirteen she attended her first concert without parental supervision, catching the rockabilly-tinged punk band Social Distortion in San Luis Obispo; the performance prompted her to begin writing songs, and by the end of high school she had composed nearly three hundred pieces while appearing weekly at a neighborhood café.
In 2000, during her time at the California Institute of the Arts, Jackson fractured her back after falling from a rope swing. Hospital medication triggered allergic seizures, and her extended rehabilitation produced a dependence on painkillers. Abrupt withdrawal precipitated depression and eating disorders, yet she channeled these struggles into her songwriting as a path toward recovery. Upon resuming live performances, Christine Ness, a longtime acquaintance of Jackson’s mother, caught one of her café sets and was struck by the material. Christine’s son Julian likewise attended a show and, sharing his mother’s enthusiasm, played the songs for his father, Mike Ness of Social Distortion. Impressed, Mike Ness agreed to produce Jackson’s debut album Gilded, released in 2017 on the independent label Anti-. When she recorded the more rock-focused Wilderness two years later, Julian Ness had joined her touring band on guitar.
