Juliette Nourredine, who performs for audiences simply as Juliette, stands out as a celebrated French singer and songwriter whose recordings consistently reach the upper reaches of her country’s album rankings. She entered the world on September 25, 1962, in Paris, and launched her stage life in Toulouse while still in her teens, interpreting the material of Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf at the piano. Over the following years she added original compositions to her repertoire and began singing them herself. A 1986 theater production became her first documented release when it appeared on an independently produced cassette titled Juliette in 1987. Several years afterward, the label Le Rideau Bouge issued another concert recording, ¿Que Tal? (1991). Further projects for the same imprint comprised Irrésistible (1993), her initial studio album; Juliette Chante aux Halles (1995), a second stage presentation; Rimes Féminines (1996), a studio follow-up; and Deux Pianos (1998), a live set recorded with Didier Goret. The 1998 album Assassins Sans Couteaux signaled a decisive shift in Juliette’s trajectory. Universal’s 2000 reissue of the title made it her debut release on a major label. The following year the company brought the rest of her earlier Le Rideau Bouge catalog back into circulation. Le Festin de Juliette (2002), her subsequent collection of original songs, achieved her strongest commercial showing up to that point by entering the French albums chart at number 21. Capitalizing on that momentum, the label assembled the retrospective Ma Vie, Mon Oeuvre, Vol. 1 (1993), subtitled “20 Ans, 20 Chansons.” Later efforts Mutatis Mutandis (2005) and Bijoux & Babioles (2008) surpassed even those results, both landing inside the national Top Ten.
