La Autoridad de la Sierra emerged when Arturo Palomar, a Guadalajara-born composer and arranger formerly with K-Paz de la Sierra, parted ways in October 2004 alongside several other key members from one of duranguense’s leading acts. Settling in Chicago, the established center of the style, Palomar and his associates quickly formed a new ensemble and completed their first album by February 2005. That debut, 100% Autoridad Duranguense, registered strongly on multiple Billboard Latin tallies. A series of well-received live dates followed, leading to the November release of their second effort, Gracias Rigo. The band’s rapid ascent earned a Billboard award nomination that same year, underscored by heavy Mexican radio rotation and repeated sell-out engagements. Following the regional Mexican pattern of frequent releases and relentless road work, the group issued new material roughly every six months. In 2006, only its second year of existence, La Autoridad de la Sierra received the Lo Nuestro Award for Group of the Year. The ensemble sustained its chart visibility with the 2007 album Momentos Inolvidables, which entered Billboard’s regional Mexican survey at number five.
