Biography
Among the host of youthful vocalists propelled into prominence by the reality-television boom at the turn of the twenty-first century stands Marie-Élaine Thibert. Born in Montreal on April 18, 1982, she trained in vocal music and violin at l'École Pierre-Laporte de Montréal prior to auditioning for the first season of Star Académie in 2003. That Québecois adaptation of the global amateur showcase quickly turned her into a viewer favorite; she even shared the stage with her idol Celine Dion while advancing all the way to the finale. Although Wilfred Le Bouthillier ultimately claimed the title, Thibert secured a recording deal and moved more than 300,000 units of her self-titled debut album. A concert tour commenced in late 2004, its final performance at Montreal’s Bell Centre captured for a widely purchased DVD. The record later received the 2005 Juno Award for Francophone Album of the Year and paved the way for the chart-topping successor Comme Ça, issued in 2007.
