In 2000 Maurício Manieri earned Revelation of the Year honors at the seventh Multishow Music Awards as a romantic soul singer. Early in the preceding decade he collaborated with the DJ pair Thaíde e DJ Hum and the street-dance collective Unidade Móvel. Serving as keyboardist, he contributed to sessions for Alexia, Double You, Undercover, and Culture Beat. His debut solo album, A Noite Inteira, appeared in 1998 and moved 350,000 units; the following year the track “Bem-Querer” was placed on the soundtrack for TV Globo’s telenovela Vila Madalena. After his reading of “Garota de Ipanema” (Tom Jobim/Vinícius de Moraes) was featured on the compilation Todas as Garotas de Ipanema, he received an invitation in 2000 to supply Portuguese-language vocals for the Elton John compositions on the Dreamworks animated feature The Road to El Dorado, a contribution that earned the composer’s approval.
