Sandy and Júnior, the offspring of Xororó from the longstanding partnership Xitãozinho and Xororó, made their initial mark in 1989 at roughly age five with a performance of “Maria Chiquinha” on TV Globo’s Som Brasil. Two years afterward Universal carefully positioned their debut release, Aniversário do Tatu, which moved 250,000 units within the children’s market. Their follow-up children’s project, Sábado à Noite, achieved 310,000 copies. By 1993 the duo shifted focus toward a maturing audience with Tô Ligado em Você, whose title track reworked “You’re the One That I Want” from Grease; the album tallied 360,000 sales. Pra Dançar Com Você arrived in 1994 still aimed at teenagers yet rooted in Jovem Guarda repertoire, featuring “O Bom” by Eduardo Araújo and “Minha Fama de Mau” by Erasmo Carlos. Você É D+ (1995) delivered the hit “O Universo Precisa de Vocês” and reached 450,000 units. Continuing upward sales momentum brought half-million totals on the next two projects, culminating in the 1998 live recording Era Uma Vez…Ao Vivo, which became their first million-selling title. In 1999 the pair launched Programa Sandy & Junior on TV Globo to widespread acclaim; that same year As Quatro Estações sold 1.8 million copies while an extensive array of merchandise and image licensing turned into a major commercial success. Sandy received the Best Brazilian Female Singer honor via public vote at the 2000 Prêmio Multishow de Música.
