Distinct from the folk singer-songwriter active in the early 1970s who shared their moniker, the Swedish trio Melony emerged in the 1990s out of Stockholm, focusing on a style of pop rock that blended sharp angles with broad commercial appeal. Comic book translator Peter Kvint handled guitar and vocals, joined by drummer Mana Eriksson and bassist Gunnar Norden; the group had initially come together simply to perform at a friend’s wedding. After issuing an EP exclusively in Sweden through the Soap label, Minty Fresh Records president Jim Powers brought them on board in 1997 to handle releases aimed at American and mainstream European audiences. Their first full-length effort, Satisfaction, appeared that August, with tracks centered around catchy hooks and melodies alongside Kvint’s unique perspective on American pop culture, most notably showcased in ‘Big Dipper’ and ‘Barbra Streisand Nose’.
