Biography
Milan Ring, an Australian artist, used her 2021 album I’m Feeling Hopeful to test the old saying that no one stands completely alone. The wide-ranging R&B project reached listeners with only minimal outside input, limited to scattered co-writing acknowledgments and occasional guest verses. That record quickly positioned her among the country’s leading voices in the style and cleared pathways for international partnerships.
Born into a family blending Indian and Chinese ancestry, Ring took up keyboards early in life. During her teenage years Jimi Hendrix sparked her interest in guitar, prompting her to acquire a Fender Stratocaster. Beginning in 2014 she issued singles and EPs on her own; wider notice arrived five years later when “Say to Me” earned a nomination for Most Performed R&B/Soul Work at the APRA Awards, which honor Australian songwriting.
Issued as her debut on the Astral People imprint, I’m Feeling Hopeful served as her defining artistic statement through R&B tracks that balanced sensuality, atmospheric textures, and urban edge. Ring performed every instrument while also handling primary production, engineering, mixing, and mastering duties. Observers noted her skill at reproducing these arrangements onstage, where she sang and played guitar while activating live samples and keyboard parts. The album’s reception led to work with Winston Surfshirt, B Wise, the Social Experiment (Chance the Rapper’s side project), and Questlove of the Roots. In 2024 she followed with her second full-length, Mangos, which broadened her sound through sessions with producers Marcello Maio, Beso Palma, and additional collaborators.
