Biography
London-born vocalist JGrrey first drew widespread attention through her appearance on the studio-based video series Colours, where her wistful yet earnest lyrics paired with a buttery-smooth tone. The singer/songwriter’s debut EP Grreydaze arrived in early 2019 and found her examining relationships, family, and mental health across ethereal, hazy production.
Born in Lambeth, JGrrey moved between foster homes throughout London until her adoption at age six. Though her mother required her to attend stage school, the future artist never envisioned a singing career; despite writing lyrics for years, she discovered her vocal ability only during casual jam sessions with friends. A music video created with her then-boyfriend eventually reached rapper Manga Saint Hilare, who insisted she visit the studio, resulting in their unreleased collaboration “Zoning.”
Following that initial session, JGrrey recognized her own promise and built a home studio. There she cut her debut singles “Ready 2 Die” and “Don't Fade,” both issued in late 2017. The tracks combined warm, breezy production with effortlessly smooth vocals; a Colours performance of the latter accumulated millions of views and supplied the London vocalist her first brush with recognition.
Throughout 2018 she maintained a measured release pace. Third single “Growing” delivered an uplifting message of self-empowerment, while fourth outing “All for You” incorporated funk and electronica into her established sound. Momentum continued into 2019 with “Pretty Insane” and “Notice,” setting the stage for Grreydaze’s March arrival. The EP extended the dreamlike neo-soul of prior work yet expanded her range through broader song structures and refined vocal effects. Later that year she reached her largest audiences to date as support on Billie Eilish’s Where Do We Go? Tour across European venues. The run was followed in September by the funk-inspired single “Better Off,” issued on streaming platforms.
