Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Janjay Lowe would later perform under the name Mon Rovîa. At seven he was adopted by American Christian missionaries during the Second Liberian Civil War and spent his childhood relocating across Florida, Montana, and the Bahamas, where Christian pop and worship music formed his earliest listening. At thirteen a foster sibling opened his ears to indie pop through Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, and Passion Pit; he soon picked up guitar and began writing original material.

After finishing high school he moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for college. There he channeled the lingering effects of early displacement, his survivor’s guilt over escaping violence in his homeland, and a vision of collective renewal into new songs. He contacted university acquaintance Eric Cromartie, an artist and label manager, whose encouragement helped shape his path forward. Adopting the stage name Mon Rovîa in honor of his birthplace, he began sharing videos online that quickly amassed a substantial following.

His 2021 debut album, Dark Continent, merged spare acoustic writing with layered electronics while addressing trauma, mental health, and recovery. Two 2023 EPs, Act 1: The Wandering and Act 2: Trials, along with the singles “Cleopatra,” “Outlaw for Your Love,” and “City on a Hill,” marked his continued evolution.
