Biography
Brighton-based rock trio Our Girl pursue their distinctive version of contemporary grunge-tinged indie rock, where abrupt loud-quiet shifts are balanced by the emotionally direct songwriting of vocalist Soph Nathan. Beginning with their initial release, the 2015 single "Sleeper," the group established an identity centered on personal vulnerability, supported by lyrics that examine ordinary interpersonal dynamics and daily obstacles. Their first album-length statement, 2018's Stranger Today, sharpened this candid perspective, while 2024's The Good Kind further smoothed some of the project's rougher sonic contrasts after the members navigated multiple hardships across the years between the two records.
The project originated in 2015 once Nathan, already active in several groups such as the Big Moon, accumulated songs that resisted placement in her existing outlets. She enlisted classmate Josh Tyler on bass to develop initial recordings in her basement, after which the pair contacted Lauren Wilson to handle drums and secured a proper rehearsal facility. Nathan's prior industry connections quickly secured a deal with Cannibal Hymns, resulting in the release of "Sleeper" that same year. In 2016 the trio collaborated with Steve Ansell of Blood Red Shoes to track the EP Normally in a single session, then continued working with Ansell on three 2017 singles: "Being Around," "No Big Deal," and a version of Ty Segall's "Sad Fuzz." Despite Nathan's ongoing responsibilities with the Big Moon, the band completed Stranger Today in August 2018 under the guidance of producer Bill Ryder-Jones of the Coral. A set of demos titled Bedroom Record appeared that December, followed by Live at St Pancras Old Church in mid-2019.
Themes of relationships, community, illness, and recovery from difficulty informed the group's next studio album, which surfaced five years afterward. Co-produced by John Parish, known for work with PJ Harvey and Sparklehorse, alongside the Big Moon's Fern Ford and Nathan herself, October 2024's The Good Kind presented a smoother alt-rock aesthetic and signaled the band's transition to Bella Union.
