Portuguese musician Pedro Khima reached the upper ranks of his country’s charts with notable speed. The first album he released under his own name entered the Portuguese Top 20 during its year of issue, 2007. Music had already become his central ambition well before that milestone; by fourteen he was appearing frequently onstage and delivering songs drawn from the catalogs of Nirvana, INXS, the Pixies, and other American rock standard-bearers. Shortly afterward he developed a lasting interest in writing original material. His earliest ensemble, Sally Lune, for which he functioned as principal songwriter and lead vocalist, issued the English-language album Stereo-Jukebox in 2001. Although the band members were devoted to that repertoire, Portuguese audiences proved far less receptive. After modest success with the group, Khima chose to pursue a solo career performing in his first language. He began composing the songs that would form his debut solo record in 2004. When Pedro Khima finally appeared in 2007, the single “Esfera” was adopted as the theme for a widely viewed Portuguese telenovela. The resulting exposure kept the track inside the Portuguese Billboard Top 20 for several consecutive months and helped secure airplay for the album’s other releases, “O Gesto Que é Meu” and “Saltar Até.”
