Biography
Growing up in Surrey, River Matthews cultivated his passion for music through studying covers drawn from the catalogs of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and similar artists. Although his rich, soulful voice suited those classic selections well, he only gathered the resolve to compose his own material during his mid-twenties. The initial composition emerged as an appeal directed toward a romantic partner, which he performed for her while seated in the front of his car. Even after this breakthrough, further songwriting waited until the complete end of that relationship. At the Park School in his native Woking, a facility for students with special needs where he was employed, Matthews contributed to constructing a studio and began developing his songs there. A connection through another musician led to an introduction with Jamie Scott, the singer, songwriter, and producer, who placed Matthews on his Catherine Records imprint and took on production duties for the debut EP. In addition to this arrangement, a U.S. agreement was secured with Nettwerk Records, resulting in the early 2016 release of the Feels Like Morning EP.
