Biography
Ryan Murgatroyd, a South African house producer, crafts smooth yet propulsive dance tracks shaped by the sounds of his homeland. He originally operated out of Johannesburg, where he directed the Soul Candi Institute of Music, a school devoted to music production. His initial international breakthrough arrived in 2007, when BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong took notice of the single "Funk Country." That same year also saw the release of "Music Makes Me Feel" on Mark Knight's Toolroom Trax. In 2008 he teamed with Konstantinos Karatamaglou to form the duo Crazy White Boy, which issued multiple singles and a full-length album through Soul Candi. After moving to Cape Town, Murgatroyd pursued an electro-house style in certain solo releases around 2010, yet the 2013 track "Bantwana's Piano" marked a shift toward deeper engagement with South African musical traditions. Additional singles and EPs subsequently appeared on Get Physical Music, culminating in his 2017 compilation and mix, Africa Gets Physical, Vol. 1.
