Biography
Emerging in the latter half of the 2010s, Silver Sphere developed a hybrid style that fused dreamy bedroom pop with effervescent electronic textures, issuing a run of self-recorded tracks exploring heartbreak and teenage experiences. The material drew support from listeners attuned to the earlier bedroom recordings of Frankie Cosmos and Clairo, figures whose work seemed to inform her approach. While still a college student, she issued her first album, yikes!, in 2019.
Sophie Cates, who performs as Silver Sphere, debuted the track under that name in 2017 with the lush, self-produced breakup song "Darling Don't." She kept composing and tracking candid material from a youthful vantage point inside her dorm at Chicago's Columbia College, later releasing cuts such as "drinking games" and "sucks 4 u." Both appeared on the October 2019 arrival of yikes! via Human Re Sources. An EP titled all my boyfriends followed in September 2020 and contained the song "ghosts!"
