Biography
Born on February 5, 1977, in Rome, Italian pop musician Simone Cristicchi pursued creative outlets throughout his youth, testing design work before locating his primary expression through music. After locating a guitar in his attic at age 17, he assembled rock bands in his late teens that performed material by Nirvana and additional alternative rock acts. Near his twentieth birthday, Cristicchi cultivated an inclination toward original songwriting, and one year afterward earned his earliest recognition when SIAE honored the composition “L’uomo dei Bottoni.” Regional touring and opening slots for established performers soon generated recording opportunities. He entered a recording agreement with Carosello Records in 2000 and delivered his first single, “Elettroshock.” Cristicchi made his initial Sanremo Festival appearance—an event that routinely supplies Italian musicians their earliest route to national visibility—in 2002. The 2006 major-label debut Fabbricante di Canzoni reached number 11 on national charts. He revisited Sanremo the same year with moderate results. One year later he captured the festival title with “Ti Regalero una Rosa,” a piece addressing the conditions of Italian mental health treatment facilities and the lives of their residents. The track climbed to number three on Italian pop charts and appeared on the 2007 album Dall’altra Parte del Cancello.
