Formed in Argentina during 1992, the Latin rap collective Sindicato Argentino del Hip Hop assembled twelve regional musicians who launched their recorded career on Nacion Hip Hop, the country’s inaugural hip-hop compilation, contributing the tracks “Del Barrio” and “Pide Mas.” The ensemble soon joined Control Machete and Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas for appearances on MTV Lingo and comparable showcases. By 1999 the lineup had contracted to a five-piece configuration that included Smoler, Derek, Frost, Huexo, and DJ Fabry; the reduced group entered the studio to create the 2000 release Un Paso A La Eternidad, which contained a rap reinterpretation of the Los Abuelos de la Nada standard “Mil Horas.” One year afterward the same five members received a Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Rap/Hip Hop album category.
