Originating from Newcastle during the closing years of the 1990s, the British all-girl hip-pop outfit Sirens brought together vocalists Karina Brians, Kat Haslam, and Michelle Heaton. After Heaton’s departure, Lea Cummings stepped in to fill her role. The ensemble built a dedicated club audience in their hometown by 2001 while also penetrating the music circles of London. This momentum led label proprietor Keith Armstrong to notice them, resulting in a 2002 signing to his Kitchenware Records imprint. The following year saw the issuance of their first single, “Things Are Gettin’ Better,” written by Pharrell Williams. Control Freaks, their initial full-length release, came shortly thereafter and earned the members praise akin to that received by Gwen Stefani and the Beastie Boys. Scheduled for a 2007 launch is the band’s second album, La La Land.
