Xavier Germain-Poitras on guitar and Louis Guillemette on drums make up Solids, the Montreal duo whose lo-fi style blends punk energy with melodic hooks in the vein of Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth. The pair had already performed together in Expectorated Sequence when, toward the end of 2009, Germain-Poitras brought forward song ideas that lay outside that band’s scope and invited Guillemette to develop them. Although the musicians originally planned to enlarge Solids’ roster, they discovered that their rapport worked most effectively as a two-piece, leading to the 2010 release of their debut EP, Generic Dogs. After issuing the 2011 7" Fog Friends and a 2013 split single alongside Toronto’s Animal Faces, Solids entered the studio with producer Adrian Popovich, ex-member of Tricky Woo, to record their first full-length album. That effort emerged in 2014 as Blame Confusion, showcasing some of the band’s most densely packed rock to date.
