The R&B production and recording group Somethin' for the People came together in Los Angeles during 1990, assembled by Oakland natives Curtis "Sauce" Wilson and Jeff "Fuzzy" Young together with L.A. resident Rochad "Cat Daddy" Holiday. Several years of songwriting and demo sessions led to their breakthrough when Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy commissioned them to compose material for Samuelle. In 1993 the trio secured a deal with Capitol Records and issued their self-titled debut album, while also contributing songs to Brandy, En Vogue, and UNV.

By 1996 Somethin' for the People had moved to a new label, prompting Warner Bros. to reissue the earlier Capitol LP. Their sophomore effort, This Time It's Personal, arrived in September 1997 and yielded the gold-selling single "My Love Is the Shhh!," which reached the Top Five on both the pop and R&B charts. While developing a follow-up project, Sauce, Fuzzy, and Cat Daddy stayed active as producers on Will Smith's hit album Big Willie Style and on Adina Howard's Welcome to Fantasy Island. Their next collection, Issues, finally appeared in July 2000.
