Spencer. is a self-reliant Brooklyn resident whose recordings sometimes suggest the work of a web-based collective. He blends reflective R&B, earthy hip-hop, and relaxed indie rock. After launching his career in his teens through self-released material that drew BBC notice for the 2018 track “Want U Back,” the vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer delivered the 4AD album Are U Down? in 2021 and the independent Nolademos EP in 2023.

Born Spencer Allen in Rochester, the New York native grew up immersed in music. He began on trumpet and piano, and during a summer session at the Eastman School of Music he played trumpet in an ensemble. In 2016 he posted the three-instrumental SoundCloud EP Starcaster, spotlighting his hypnotic, lightly strummed guitar. Momentum built in 2017 and 2018 with the three-track sets Visceral Love and Want U Back, along with the standalone pieces “To Be You” and a reworking of Visceral Love’s “Open Wide” that featured Ishmael Raps. These tracks displayed Spencer.’s candid songwriting and his relaxed yet layered, emotionally resonant delivery. “Want U Back” emerged as a pivotal release, earning placement on prominent playlists such as Jamz Supernova’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show.

After signing with 4AD, Spencer. issued his label debut “Automatic” in 2019. In 2020 he sustained interest ahead of his first full-length with singles including “2much” and “Hold It Down.” The largely self-produced Are U Down?, centered on themes of heartache and longing, appeared in 2021. Returning to independence, he released the four-track Nolademos EP in 2023, an effort that felt simultaneously spontaneous and deliberate.
