Emerging as a significant presence within California's rap landscape, the American rapper $tupid Young forged a distinctive version of the longstanding gangsta rap aesthetic that first took shape amid Los Angeles streets. Drawing lyrics directly from personal experience, $tupid Young released multiple notable mixtapes such as True Story in 2018 and B.A.R.S., Vol. 1 in 2020.

Raised from birth in Long Beach, California, $tupid Young came of age inside the close-knit Cambodian enclave there, moving past early involvement with neighborhood gangs to discover rap as a vocation while still young and refining an individual artistic identity across his adolescent period. Inspired by the gangsta approach first advanced by N.W.A, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg, $tupid Young incorporated the P-funk elements characteristic of West Coast rap and fused them with trap, yielding a singular hybrid style. His initial mixtape, One of One, arrived in 2018 and already featured appearances alongside Lil Durk and Mozzy; he followed that project with True Story plus the sequel True Story II during 2019. In the next year the prolific artist joined MBNel for Yellow Tape while also issuing B.A.R.S., Vol. 1, a mixtape underscoring the breadth of Asian-American hip-hop.
