The Berzerker delivers ferocious death-grind metal that crushes all opposition through a potent blend of industrial textures, abrasive noise, and massively weighty riffs. Formed in Melbourne during 1995 as an anonymous studio solo endeavor, this misanthropic Australian outfit cultivates an aura of secrecy while performing behind grotesque mutant masks. Earache Records added the band to its roster in 1998, leading to the 2000 appearance of their imposing, self-titled debut album. MTV promptly banned the group’s initial video, accompanying the song “Reality,” because of its grotesque visuals and seizure-triggering effects. Following a U.S. trek alongside Dying Fetus, Gorguts, and Skinless, the Berzerker entered the studio once more to capture its sophomore effort. Released in 2002, Dissimulate surpassed the debut in extremity and featured a version of Carcass’ “Corporal Jigsore Quandary,” establishing the band as a menacing force within metal that surpasses Gwar’s theatrical excess while maintaining technical precision and an unsettling seriousness.
