Biography
Buttless Chaps entered the Victoria, British Columbia music community in 1998. Their overall country-rock approach incorporated indie rock inflections alongside fuzzy electronic textures. Dave Gowans served as the frontman on vocals, guitar, and banjo, joined by Lasse Lutick on guitar and lap steel, Morgan McDonald on keyboards and synthesizers, and Torben Wilson on drums. Their debut self-titled LP arrived shortly after formation, earned strong critical praise, and secured national distribution. Tumblewire followed a year later and received support from a coast-to-coast Canadian tour. Vancouver became the band’s home by the close of 2001. Regular live appearances persisted while they completed the third album, Death Scenes I II III, released on Scratch. The move to Vancouver indie label Mint in 2003 yielded Love This Time, widely regarded as their strongest work to that point. Local contributors Ida Nilsen and Carolyn Mark participated, allowing the album to layer electronic moon boots and a pure pop belt buckle onto the Chaps’ country-ish foundation. Canadian and U.S. tours ensued in late 2003 and early 2004. Ida Nilsen subsequently became a permanent member, contributing vocals, accordion, synthesizer, and additional instruments. Where Night Holds Light appeared in Canada in February 2006, followed by the U.S. release two months later.
