Biography
As Thomston, the New Zealander born Thomas Stoneman crafts yearning alternative pop that incorporates electronica, R&B, and hip-hop. His initial release came in 2014 with the home-recorded EP School Night, after which he secured a Sony contract that yielded the 2016 debut album Topograph. The companion projects En-Route: Los Angeles and En-Route: London preceded the June 2020 single “April,” the opening track from his second full-length.
Stoneman entered the world in London, England, in 1995, yet his family settled in Titirangi on Auckland’s outskirts while he was still an infant. Classical piano study began at age five; by high school he was composing original material and competing in local contests, which produced a management agreement before he reached adulthood. Under the Thomston moniker he issued the self-produced School Night in early 2014, then followed in June with Argonaut, an EP featuring contributions from Joel Little (Lorde, Broods) and Josh Fountain (Leisure). The four-track Backbone EP appeared the next spring, in April 2015.
Early 2016 brought the single “Window Seat,” which featured Australian EDM artist Wafia; several months afterward Thomston served as support on Broods’ arena tour. His Sony debut arrived that September with Topograph, his first complete album. Two further EPs surfaced in 2019—the luminous En-Route: Los Angeles and the darker En-Route: London—before “April” emerged in June 2020 as the inaugural song from his sophomore long-player.
