Biography
Thyla, a four-piece indie band from Brighton, England, craft their own variety of dream pop by drawing on the atmospheric legacies of My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins while weaving in shoegaze textures and post-punk propulsion shaped by the Horrors, Radiohead, Placebo, and Blondie. The lineup came together in 2015 when vocalist Millie Duthie, bassist Dan Hole, and drummer Danny Southwell—acquaintances from the British and Irish Modern Music Institute—began writing together; guitarist Mitch Duce arrived shortly afterward and completed the group’s emerging identity. Initial recordings such as “Us and Them,” “Car Crash,” and “Motherlode” suggested a blurred, atmospheric approach, yet the direction crystallized with the 2017 singles “Ferris Wheels,” “Tell Each Other Lies,” and “Pristine Dream,” which foregrounded the band’s affinities with those foundational acts. Duthie’s singing, shifting between weightless and insistent tones, drew widespread online notice to “Pristine Dream,” prompting the swift follow-ups “I Was Biting” and “Blame,” whose sharper, more forceful character echoed the intensity of Savages and Dream Wife.
