Demob Happy, a grunge and psych rock outfit, came together in Newcastle, U.K., during 2008. Their creative momentum only gathered once the group relocated south in 2011 to Brighton, a city known for its openness to experimentation. From their partially owned base at the Nowhere Man Café, bassist/lyricist/lead singer Matt Marcantonio, drummer/vocalist Tom Armstrong, guitarist/vocalist Matt Renforth, and guitarist/vocalist Adam Godfrey built a following through high-energy performances and an unrestrained approach.

In 2015 the quartet stepped away from urban surroundings and retreated to a Welsh cottage without internet access. There they refined earlier songs and generated new material that shaped their first full-length release, Dream Soda, which they described as a concept album exploring consumerism. The band partnered with SO Recordings for the project and tracked final mixes at Eastbourne’s Echo Zoo Studios under producer Christoph Skirl, a friend. To promote Dream Soda they toured Europe and appeared on the U.K. festival circuit, among them a set at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2015.

By late 2016 Renforth had departed, reducing Demob Happy to a trio just before a U.K. run supporting Tigercub. Their first release in this configuration was the 2017 single “Dead Dreamers,” which led into the 2018 album Holy Doom—their initial effort as a three-piece. Early the following year they issued the single “Less Is More.”
