East London serves as the base for producers Jeff Russell and Aaron Greenwood, who together form the U.K. garage duo WYTE LABL. Their style merges the bright chords, galloping beats, and chopped-up vocals that defined the genre’s peak era with a deep-rooted commitment to pop songcraft honed over many years. A mutual friend brought the two together at a point when Russell already possessed club DJ experience and airtime on the London dance station Rinse FM, while Greenwood had developed abilities as a vocalist and pianist. Drawing influence from Todd Edwards and M.J. Cole, the pair started composing material and issued their first single, “This Year (As We Go),” in 2013. BBC and Kiss FM both offered airplay, leading to a June 2014 appearance by the duo on DJ Target’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show. After putting out multiple DJ mixes and several remixes that circulated online, WYTE LABL joined the Virgin EMI roster in 2015, releasing the single “Runaway” later that summer.
