A Breath Before Surfacing

Deathcore outfit A Breath Before Surfacing originated in Tucson, AZ, during 2006 amid the same active local circuit that had already produced established metal acts including Job for a Cowboy and the Red Chord. The initial lineup featured vocalist Dustin Curtis, guitarist Scott Whisenant, and drummer Trevor Gunning; the trio completed its first demo the next year and promptly secured a deal with Mediaskare Records. Shortly afterward they recruited Jacob Green on guitar and bass, then tracked material alongside producer Zack Ohren, whose credits already included All Shall Perish and As Blood Runs Black. By summer 2008 the band stood prepared to issue its debut full-length, Death Is Swallowed in Victory, yet Green’s departure forced an abrupt cancellation of the planned tour and sent the remaining members back into auditions for a replacement.
