Antonio Flores earned recognition as a Spanish performer who acted on screen and composed songs. Born the sole son of the celebrated entertainers Lola Flores and Antonio González, he grew up immersed in music and surrounded by stage professionals from childhood onward. At eight he made his screen debut in the motion picture El Taxi de los Conflictos. Although flamenco surrounded his upbringing, he selected pop and rock as his preferred musical direction. His first album, Antonio, appeared in 1980; while it eventually gained esteem, the record met little success upon release. Two later projects, Al Caer el Sol from 1984 and Gran Via from 1988, likewise failed to meet commercial hopes. The decade proved challenging for his recorded output, yet he contributed to well-received films such as Colegas, Calé, and Sangre y Arena. His fortunes shifted in the early 1990s when he wrote and produced his sister’s debut album, De Ley. That inventive effort drew the notice of listeners across Spain. He built on the momentum by issuing his own fourth studio album, Cosas Mias, in 1995. The launch of this, his strongest-selling record to that point, was soon followed by the sudden loss of his mother. Only two weeks afterward, on May 30, 1995, he died from a drug overdose at his Madrid residence. Interest in his catalog surged immediately, prompting multiple compilations over the ensuing years that met with widespread public embrace.
