Avenger of Blood originated in San Francisco, long recognized as the epicenter of American thrash during the early 1980s and the origin point for several defining acts within the style. Drawing on influences from both American and European strains of the genre, guitarist Eric formed the group in 2003, recruiting Marc on guitars, Shannon on drums, and Shawn on bass. A demo appeared the next year, after which the musicians relocated to Las Vegas. There they tightened their sound through repeated live appearances and gradually developed a local following. Those efforts secured a deal with independent label JCM in 2005, leading directly to the release of the debut album Complete Annihilation. The period that followed brought personnel and label shifts, as Eric departed and was replaced by Sal Lalli. Even so, the band’s strong showings at festivals including Northwest Deathfest 2, Minneapolis Mayhem 1 and 2, and Thunder In the North drew the notice of New York-based Heavy Artillery, which featured the group on its Speed Kills...Again compilation. In 2008 Avenger of Blood issued its second full-length album, Death Brigade.
