Born to Spanish parents in Belgium, Maria Isabelle Perez launched her recording career in 1999 under the name Belle Perez. At the outset she pursued a conventional pop approach, largely in English, while seeking a slot in the Eurovision Song Contest. Two Top 20 albums in that English-language style preceded her 2002 shift to Latin pop on the album Baila Perez, where she adopted a sound reminiscent of Gloria Estefan’s Miami Sound Machine. High-energy Latin dance tracks infused with a subtle European accent then dominated her output, securing the number-one position on the Belgian charts and a Top 20 placement in the Netherlands as she expanded her reach beyond domestic markets. Building on that momentum, Perez maintained her focus on Latin pop and continued to register strong chart results with the 2006 release Gotitas de Amor and the 2008 album Gipsy, both of which found audiences across several countries in addition to Belgian- and Netherlands-only compilations issued during the same period.
