Stewart Ashby, who performs under the name Big Scoob, grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, where gang involvement occupied much of his late teens and early twenties until rap offered an alternative route. Teaming with fellow MC Tech N9ne, he co-founded 57th Street Rogue Dog Villains, whose several albums appeared across the final years of the 1990s and the opening years of the following decade. Industry disillusionment prompted Scoob to step away and concentrate on his daughters, yet Tech N9ne persuaded him to resume recording after several inactive years. Once aboard Strange Music, the imprint Tech N9ne founded, Scoob delivered the solo projects Monsterifik in 2009 and Damn Fool in 2011, each featuring numerous contributions from affiliated Strange Music artists. That same year also saw the arrival of the No Filter EP. Mid-2012 brought the two-volume mixtape series Dope Talk, Vol. 1 and Dope Talk, Vol. 2. Although Scoob continued contributing guest verses to Tech N9ne projects and other Strange Music releases, his next full solo album, H.O.G., did not surface until November 2016. Two years later the follow-up Duality entered the marketplace and reached number 12 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart.
