Biography
In 2012 Billon came together after Ed Butler, Robbie Lamond, and Rupert Wilson-Copp began sharing a studio near Finsbury Park. The three producers devoted much of the following year to shaping an eclectic mix of garage, house, and techno before posting “Turn It Around,” which featured vocalist Lola Coca, and “Hurt Me” on SoundCloud. Skream, Annie Mac, and Mistajam offered early airplay on their BBC Radio 1 programs, prompting the tracks to reach Rinse’s A&R staff and resulting in the July 2013 release of the Turn It Around EP.
Rupert Wilson-Copp soon departed over creative differences, leaving Butler and Lamond to issue the Meditate EP in March 2014. That year they also teamed with American singer Maxine Ashley for the single “Special,” a release that gained traction on both sides of the Atlantic and opened the door to a U.S. tour. Remixes of Katy B’s “Still” and Ella Eyre’s “If I Go” appeared around the same time, after which Lamond relocated to California yet remained involved in the project. Butler therefore took on all live duties and adopted Billon’s visual identity.
The third EP, Dive In, arrived in March 2015 and included contributions from formative influences Todd Edwards and Nu:Tone. Several months later an increased-BPM cover of Aftershock’s “Slave to the Vibe” surfaced, signaling a full-length debut scheduled for release on Rinse in 2016.
