A self-professed admirer of Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Paul Simon, singer-songwriter Britton Buchanan first captured widespread attention by finishing second on the American edition of The Voice in 2018. During the season finale he unveiled his own composition, “Where You Come From,” which quickly gained traction on streaming platforms and climbed to number 15 on Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart.

Raised in Sanford, North Carolina, Buchanan set aside sports in favor of the guitar and musical theater while still young; by thirteen he was already performing with a local cover group. The following year he won a songwriting competition whose prize included a recording session with engineer John Davenport, known for his work with Springsteen and the Rolling Stones.

When the fourteenth season of the competition premiered in February 2018, the seventeen-year-old Buchanan introduced himself to viewers by delivering Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble” while accompanying himself on guitar. All four coaches—Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton—offered enthusiastic approval, and under Keys’s guidance he progressed to the finale with interpretations of material associated with Ed Sheeran, John Mellencamp, and Billy Joel.

In the May conclusion he placed second after performing the Young Rascals’ “Good Lovin’,” a duet with Keys on Avicii’s “Wake Me Up,” and his own original ballad “Where You Come From,” the last of which entered the digital-song-sales chart at number 15. Following the broadcast he returned to North Carolina to complete high school.
