After years collaborating with college friend Keith Gendel of Papas Fritas, longtime Boston-area songwriter Geech Sorensen chose to launch his own project in 1999. He recruited singer Miranda Inganni, drummer Eric Herman, and bassist Jeff Wright, forming Capital City as a ramshackle indie rock quartet that year. Near By Music issued the EP Start your Own Country the following spring, spotlighting duets between Inganni and Sorensen. Regional live performances defined the next year, yet by the spring after that the group had issued a fresh single while readying its first full-length album. Compilation appearances and live gigs continued in the meantime, until Inganni exited before any substantial recording occurred and Walter Blazewicz came aboard at the end of the year. Their debut album, Am I Invisible, finally reached stores in June of 2002 and received an enthusiastic indie response.
