Carlo Marrale, a guitarist, singer, and songwriter born in Genova in 1952, earned his greatest recognition through his long association with Matia Bazar. In 1973 he launched the band Jet alongside guitarist Piero Cassano and bassist Aldo Stellita. After an unsuccessful bid at that year’s Sanremo Festival, the three musicians added vocalist Antonella Ruggiero and drummer Giancarlo Golzi, forming Matia Bazar. Marrale stayed with the group for two decades of frequent lineup shifts and the creation of Italian pop staples including “Solo Tu,” “Vacanze Romane,” and “Ti Sento,” the last of which Irene Cara covered in 1996 as “You Need Me.” He eventually exited to launch a solo career, issuing his first album, Tra le Dita la Vita, in 1994. Over the following decade he concentrated on writing for other performers before returning in 2007 with Melody Maker, which contained new versions of “Vacanze Romane” and “Ti Sento” plus “L’Acensore” from his debut.
