In the initial years of the 1980s Danny Chan stood among Cantopop’s leading figures, matching the stature of Alan Tam and Leslie Cheung. He entered the world in Hong Kong on September 7, 1958, first appearing as an actor on TVB in 1977 before releasing his debut album First Love in 1979. Swiftly attaining prominence, he sustained remarkable popularity across the entire decade, earning an invitation to sing at the opening ceremony of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. In 1991 he declared his withdrawal from the Cantopop arena and staged a farewell concert in Shanghai the following year. Less than twelve months afterward he slipped into a coma, passing away 17 months later in 1993 at the age of 35 and prompting widespread media conjecture regarding the abrupt nature of his death.
