Biography
Roman Tam received the honorary title of Godfather of Cantopop in recognition of a singing career that lasted three decades and brought him widespread acclaim. He entered the world in Guangxi, China, on February 16, 1950, and moved to Hong Kong in 1962 when he was twelve. His first professional steps came in 1967 as the vocalist for Roman & the Four Steps; a contract with TVB followed in 1974, securing him a steady platform as one of the network’s singers. Among his most enduring contributions was the theme for Below the Lion Rock, the long-running TVB program that occupied the airwaves for two full decades between 1974 and 1994. The 1970s and 1980s marked the height of his popularity, during which he recorded several celebrated duets alongside Jenny Tseng. After withdrawing from the industry in 1996, he succumbed to liver cancer on October 18, 2002, at the age of fifty-two.
