During the 1980s, Jacky Cheung ranked among Asia's most prominent and celebrated pop icons. His formative years unfolded in Hong Kong, where exposure to Barry Manilow fueled his vocal pursuits alongside classmates in multiple local ensembles. Participation in a 1984 talent competition for amateurs led to his victory over countless rivals, securing the top honor. Polygram soon offered him a recording deal, propelling him to considerable fame within three years. A downturn struck in 1987, prompting a shift toward acting even as his recording trajectory declined sharply toward the close of the 1980s. Producer Michael Au's guidance enabled a resurgence via the release of Love You a Bit More Daily, which achieved landmark sales figures in Hong Kong. Between 1993 and 1996, successive projects moved several million units internationally, culminating in excess of 25 million records sold worldwide.
